That dummy plug is nasty!
Episodes 17-18 focus on the dummy plug and the 4th child (Touji), and I find nothing much to say. Except that why is Gendou so desperate to use the dummy plug? Isn’t that too dangerous? It could go out of control, when you least expect it. Of course Shinji (and the other Eva pilots) were very reluctant to engage Unit 03, knowing that a pilot was still inside. Perhaps Gendou had this scenario in mind.
But episode 19 seems to be more interesting, but not only because of the fallout from the use of the dummy plug.
The episode shows how little Rei values herself. Of course there will be replacements, but that line of thinking in that situation reflects how Rei sees herself–not as some hero/savior but as just a pilot. On the other hand, Asuka’s overconfidence seems to be part of her undoing.
Shinji’s departure take 2 is more justified. However, how can one resist the urge to pilot the Eva again when you see your fellow pilots in such dire conditions? Also, Kaji’s comments were of some help to push Shinji in the right direction. But it is unbelievable he and his watermelons were at the right place at the right time.
The battle between the Angel and Unit 01 was quite a spectacle. Mad teenaged pilot? Awesome. Angel-eating Eva? Yuck, but still entertaining.
So what was meant by ‘She’s awakened after all’? Ok, I was wondering since Unit 01 was walking like a gorilla after it reactivated. (So don’t post spoilers lol.) More of the true nature of the Eva might be revealed in the remaining episodes, I hope.
