My Top Anime for 2009

I said I would not do this list.  However, I made an about-face (for reasons I cannot say).  Unlike last year, my room is not such a mess today.  The weather’s still fine though.

Another thing for this year, I’ll be including shows that I haven’t finished yet but where I’m halfway through (or are ongoing shows).  The shows are Aoi Bungaku, Bakemonogatari, Cross Game, Kimi ni Todoke, Sasameki Koto.  I cannot include Kara no Kyoukai because I’m only into ep 2 and the show is still an unknown for me.  Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood doesn’t count also because I stopped watching and am saving everything for a later date.  Fairy Tail is probably gonna go on forever, and I’m still undecided on it overall.

Let me start with how difficult it was for me to rate the shows this year compared to last year.  There were less shows this year, it shouldn’t have been difficult right?  Wrong.

Where there any fave characters this year?  There were but unfortunately, there were no real standouts this year.

Entertainment Value
It spells trouble when you have no ready idea which series was the most enjoyable.  I looked at Marimite 4 as the old standard and can’t even remember what I watched.  I had to rewatch the Marimite DVD specials to remind me of what happened.  Aaargh.

Aoi Bungaku wins over everything else based on its source material.  The problem was the shows in the middle ranks.  It’s difficult choosing between shows you have an almost equal preference for.

Hah!  Spoiled by the musical extravaganza last year that was Macross Frontier (not to mention Nodame Cantabile, Aria, Code Geass 2), my mind drew a blank when I got to this category.  I was forced to rate according to how many tunes I could remember from each show, which was unfortunately very few.

This one was probably the easiest category to rank.  No problems here.

Now on to the shows themselves.

17    Canaan
Started okay, but conclusion wasn’t so good.  I’m not really satisfied at the explanations regarding the origin of Canaan.  I won’t be recommending this but if you wanted to see a certain hot babe voiced by Mamiko Noto then…

16    Eden of the East (Higashi no Eden)
Another show that started great, but never lived up to my expectations.  The ending was unsatisfactory for me.

15    Gundam 00 S2
Hmm, the concept was good, but I cannot understand why they had to have such annoying characters/villains.  The characters from Gundam SEED/Destiny were more appealing than the characters here.

14    Tytania
Enjoyable for the tea, but, hmm, lacks some edge to it.  It only trumps G00 because it doesn’t have annoying characters for me.

13    Hajime no Ippo New Challenger
Lacks more Miyata-kun.  Fail, but still entertaining.

12    Tokyo Magnitude 8.0
The is-he-dead-is-he-not guessing game sparked some discussion in the blogosphere back then.  Over-all, I think the show was nice but it’s not good enough even to be a semi-classic.

11    Sasameki Koto
The show that was in danger of being consigned to the dumped bin of history.  Because I saw it as inferior to its predecessor Aoi Hana, I was harsh to it.  However I learned to enjoy it when I decided to lower my standards for it.  The lulz does not reach Strawberry Panic levels but still good enough.

10   Aoi Bungaku Series [Best Story]
Best stories but not number 1??!!  What you have to understand is that I don’t really like tragic stories because it makes me depressed.  The source material is top-notch but as good entertainment, hmm, it doesn’t really help me escape reality, right?  As thinking entertainment, it is the best of the 2009 lot.  Also, take note that I have not read the source material so that I could judge it without any bias.  The complaints may come later once I have read the source material, if ever.

9    Tora Dora
Hmm, enjoyable, though I don’t approve of Taiga x Ryuuji.  Taiga is annoying at times.

8    Zoku Natsume Yuujincho
The first slow series that makes its way to the top 10.  It’s not as good as season 1, but still gives off that nice feeling along the likes of Aria.  Though it can be said that Aria is 10x better.  😉

7    Bounen no Xamdou [Best Music, Best Animation]
This was a good show, it introduced us (or me hehehe) to another world like no other show this year has.  Although it did start last year, and this year it doesn’t have competition like Macross Frontier et al, it just managed to end at 7.  Why?  I still cannot point it out myself though.  Perhaps a rewatch in the future might help.

6    Cross Game
This show hit the home run right on the first episode.  This show got me so excited about baseball in anime that it got me to watch Major (S1), check out Hiatari no Ryouko, and the 101 episodes of Touch.  Actually I don’t think it’s the baseball that got me hooked but yeah, it really doesn’t matter now.

5    Kimi ni Todoke
This show is better than Bounen no Xamdou??!!  Unbelievable.  But that’s how it turned out after the matrix thingy.  What does this show have that Bounen no Xamdou doesn’t have?  Well, for one I like how the thoughts of the characters are shown.  Two, the characters make me feel more sympathy.  And then there’s Mamiko Noto…

4    Bakemonogatari [Best Entertainment]
I avoided this show because of the fanservice tag attached to it.  However, I found it funny and was struck at its novelty.  It was novel to me okay.  But really, it was the staplers that endeared the show to me.  I didn’t know office supplies could be so, so dangerous.

3    Maria-sama ga Miteru 4
Even though it’s not high on the wow scale, anything with my favorite all-girls high school gang is good.  Unfortunately, there’s not much Sei but Shimako’s still there hihihi.

2    Ristorante Paradiso
The third ‘slow’ show in this list (I seem to prefer slow these days).  As with other slow shows, I just turn off my brain and enjoy.  Enjoy…yum…but it makes me hungry a little too.  😀

1    Aoi Hana
This is the biggest surprise.  More shocking than the 2007 pick.  Looking back carefully though, the picks were always about novelty and uniqueness from the pack.  It’s that gem among the gems.  I’ve read Aoi Hana described as ‘yuri tastefully done’, and tastefully done it is.  It could be said this could be the weakest number one show in the history of my top anime lists, but this year is also the weakest year of anime ever(in this blog’s history).  As I’m typing this description, I am also thinking, will I ever regret this decision?  And then I look back at Terra E, and then I conclude, I never regretted that.  The funny thing is, Aoi Hana will probably have a higher place in the yuri genre than Terra E will have in the space or sci-fi genre.  Of course it could be pointed out that the yuri genre does not have a wide selection.  But still the fact is, this show will be remembered fondly every now and then, as the one that was done just right.

For once, the dropped shows are shorter than the finished (or to be finished) anime list.  It shows how selective I was this year, or, on the other hand, how so few the good picks were for me.

  • 07-Ghost
  • Basquash!
  • Hanasakeru Seishounen
  • Hayate no Gotoku! 2
  • Miracle Train
  • Requiem for Phantom
  • Seiken no Blacksmith
  • Tatakau Shisho

Edit:  Ok, here is the rankings matrix screenshot.

  1. I’ve seen a handful of shows on your list. I like Kimi ni Todoke and Bakemonogatari (though I don’t think I’ll count them on my list because they didn’t finish airing this year). Canaan and Toradora! are a couple of my favorites.
