It’s Valentine’s so let’s talk about romance! (Obviously I don’t have a date if I am posting! Spoilers ahead so you have been warned.)
So I got the itch late last year to watch some lovey dovey anime. I
managed to watch Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun, My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU, Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo.
My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU wasn’t on my radar then because I thought the title was silly. I’m kinda not sure what started me on to researching about romance-themed series back then, but here we are. I enjoyed the cynical MC even though I don’t think the show has that great rewatch value for me. I still have to finish season 2 also.
Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun also flew past my radar. Let me just say I don’t particulary watch out for such shows anyway. I enjoyed this show about a HS mangaka and his love-struck assistant a lot, although it felt realistic and unrealistic at the same time. I’m kinda hoping for another season, though I do not follow the source material.
Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo, well, is not as easy to get into like the previous two shows. So really I haven’t finished it yet. It kinda feels generic at times. But I do like that the male MC is trying to make something of himself which kinda distinguishes him a bit from a lot of generic male MCs for me.
So with that roundabout introduction, let’s get to Natsuyuki Rendevousz.
After I ran out of romance anime I was interested in, this year I caught the itch to rewatch it. (Yay just a week before Valentine’s. I’m also rewatching Golden Time, but that is another topic.) I had always held this anime in high regard in my memory. As a story about a ghost, a widow, and her much younger suitor, back then it was quite refreshing. Unfortunately it didn’t hold up that much.
I think the show started out great. The best, most interesting part was our guy Hazuki wooing the older widow Mrs Flower Shop Manager. That in itself could have been interesting if written well. But it got more spicy when it is revealed Ghost Husband has been there all this time watching over his wife! And somehow Mr Young Suitor can see him! This generates funny ghost vs. living guy scenes.
It was topped by the Mr Ghost Husband being able to borrow Mr Young Suitor’s body, trapping the consciousness of Mr Young Suitor in a dream land. However it should have been resolved quickly. Unfortunately the time the MC was trapped in the dream land was too long, and got a bit boring. I skipped a lot of those scenes. In retrospect the whole series could have just been a movie. And I didn’t realize it then.
Even with this flaw, I will still remember this show, especially for that great OP. In fact it was my 3rd most favorite OP from 2012. What?! That was 7 years ago haha. I gotta stop now, this makes me feel ancient lol. Recommendations are welcome though, and till next, ja!
